Our Day-to-Day Nursery Curriculum in Putney

We are passionate about creating an environment where every child can thrive – following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, we ensure that children are not only achieving their developmental milestones but also enjoying their time with us.

Our goal is for each pupil to feel confident, supported, and engaged throughout their time at Square One Nursery, with curated teaching methods designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning.

What You Can Expect

Our nursery school in Putney was first established in the 1970s and continues to uphold the same caring ethos it was founded on. Our team bring together teacher-led lessons and free play, so children can discover new things at their own pace, but never feel lost. Some days are about making friends and learning how to share. Other days, it’s about building something or letting their imagination run wild. We focus on fun, hands-on learning – because that’s how kids learn best!

Our Early Years Services

We provide a complete range of early years options designed to support families throughout the year.

A gentle, personalised approach to learning

We get to know each child and plan activities that actually fit who they are – their interests, what they’re good at, and where they are right now. This way, they gain confidence, pick up new skills, and grow at their own speed, without feeling rushed or left behind.

A warm and nurturing environment

We place great importance on emotional well-being. The atmosphere here is warm, welcoming, and safe. Children should feel happy and valued, so they’re free to explore, play, and really learn without holding back.

Caring and experienced staff

Our dedicated team brings years of experience working with young children. They take the time to truly know each child, building strong relationships that help small humans feel secure and supported throughout their nursery journey.

Learning through play

Through creative play, hands-on activities, and a bit of imagination, children start building skills they’ll use for life, like communicating, solving problems, and working with others.

Small groups and individual attention

Because our groups are small and we keep plenty of staff around, each child receives our full attention. They’re encouraged and supported, so they can thrive in their own way.

A Day at Our Nursery School

Each day is designed to give children the structure they need to feel secure, while also allowing them the freedom to explore, play, and learn in a fun, supportive environment. Here’s a glimpse into a typical day:

Early Bird from 8am: This allows families to drop off their children before work, balancing their flexibility.
8:45-9:30am: Registration and free play Children start the day by arriving and engaging in some free play with their friends, helping them settle in and feel comfortable.
9:30-9:45am: Carpet time At carpet time, the children gather to talk about the activities planned for the day. This is also a time when parents are welcome to join us and have a chat with the children.
9:45-11am: Teacher-led and child-led activities This is the core of the day, with a mix of structured learning and free play. Activities include special daily activities, fantasy play, and opportunities for children to explore, discover, and develop their skills.
11-11:30am: Hand washing, snack, and story time A calming time for the children to enjoy a healthy snack and a story - it’s a nice pause in the day that also helps reinforce good habits.
11:30-12:15: Outdoor free play We encourage outdoor play to help children develop their physical skills and explore nature. Whether it’s climbing, running, or playing with outdoor toys, the children have plenty of space to move and learn.
12:15: Home time for morning children

Extra Activities

To add a further dimension to the children’s learning and development, we have a special activity every day in which every child participates and is part of our curriculum.

Monday

Gymnastics with Mrs Litvinova, our qualified pre-school gymnastics coach, helps children develop their coordination, balance, and strength in a fun, supportive environment.

Tuesday & Friday

Multi-sport activities led by Coach Killian, focusing on ball skills, athletics, and teamwork. These activities help children improve their motor skills and learn about teamwork in a playful, energetic setting.

Wednesday

Music and Movement with Miss Emily, where children explore rhythm, music, and movement to develop coordination and creativity while having fun.

Thursday

French classes with Mme Dieu from Les Coccinelles. The children are introduced to French playfully and engagingly, helping them start building language skills from a young age.

Friday

‘Foodie Friday’- On Fridays, the children get to cook, taste different fruits and vegetables, and explore topics like mindfulness and nutrition. It’s a fun, hands-on way to learn about healthy eating and the world around us.

Afternoon School

For children in their final year of nursery, we offer Afternoon School sessions on Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday afternoons. These sessions are in addition to the morning school and provide further opportunities for learning and development in preparation for the transition to primary school.

Lunch Club

For children aged two and up, we offer the chance to stay for Lunch Club. This gives parents the flexibility to extend their child’s day, and offers children more time to play, learn, and interact with their peers in a relaxed setting.
